A little while ago I started looking into YouTube and how I could best utilize the platform for my up-and-coming adventures. After creating my account, the first thing I uploaded was a video taken of me jumping from the Durban stadium. Why? I had the video in digital form already and with just a little editing (colour correction and cutting of unnecessary footage), it was as good a candidate as any. Uploading it gave me a good insight behind the scenes of the YouTube system and the power that you have available to you as a video uploader. All the effects and filters that can be applied, the colour correction, annotation, use of captions and more was just amazing. I would love to get my hands on the code behind all that. Anyway, having been inspired by the Yogscast who, as you will remember, I mentioned in this YouTube post, I have started a playthrough project of System Shock 2 (SS2).
System Shock 2
SS2 is an old game having been releases in 1999. At the time, it did not sell as well as EA had hoped but looking back on it now, SS2 changed the face of gaming. It introduced interesting new concepts and pathed the way for game legends like Deus Ex and many more. To quote Wikipedia, “Because of its design focus on player choice, Deus Ex has been compared with System Shock, a game that inspired its design. Together, these factors give the game a great degree of replayability, as the player will have vastly different experiences, depending on which methods he or she uses to accomplish objectives.” I started playing it many years ago when I was around 16 or 17 but never managed to finish it. Back then, it was considered “state of the art” and gave me a decent number of “brown-undies” moments (figuratively) :P I’m and glad to have returned to this gaming legend and look forward to completing it this time all the while filming my progress and allowing others to “play” the game with me.
System Shock 2 is a survival horror FPS (First Person Shooter) RPG (Role-Playing Game). You start by choosing your intended path (character) which consists of either Psyonics (magic), Navy (technology) and Marines (weapons). Your mission is to board a space-ship by the name of the Van Braun and determine why the ship lost contact with base command. Obviously, things have gone pear-shaped with mutant hybrids and magic monkeys running around the place and besides trying to stay alive, you need to find out what happened and if you can stop it.
This is the first time I am doing anything of the sort. Rambling on while playing a computer game is foreign to me but I think I’m slowly getting the hang of it. I would highly appreciate it if you could take a look at a couple of the videos and perhaps leave a comment or critism. Can’t improve without your help. If you like what I’m doing so far, please do subscribe as there will be lots of other content appearing on there in the coming months as I am off to South America, so the travel aspect of my YouTube account will explode (hopefully). Anyway, below are links to some of my videos. Enjoy :)
P.S. I know this does not have much to do with travel and adventure but this is just a temporary project while I wait for my tour to commence in February. Unless I upload travel specific videos, I will not mention YouTube again :)
